AMATEUR ROAD RACES McFARLANE'S DECISIVE WIN The fine weather last Saturday was instrumental in attracting large fields for all of the road races conducted by the six local clubs. The Manukau Club decided its annual junior road championship over a distance of 15 miles, the longest junior race of the season. The title was won by G. W. Holland, scr., after a stirring sprint with C. T. Dwight, scr., the 1933 winner. Holland's time was 45m 3s, against Dwight's time of 43m 43s in 1933. Holland has performed very consistently this season and lias been fastest rider in six races. L. McFarlane, 3m, caused a surprise by the decisive manner in which he won the senior 174 miles race. With five niiles to go he broke away from a group of ten riders with R. T. Baston* 3m, Over the final lap he left Baston and won by 150 yards. McFarlane won the 15 miles race for the Cotter Cup last year, since when he has steadily improved. He was only 7s slower than J. W. Clark, lm, who made fastest time in 50m 2s. Within one month, A. H. BoWen has had two wins in the Auckland Club's races. Ho won last week's senior 20 miles event off 5m over the fast roads of the Te Atatu circuit. A. G. Patrick, scr., is steadily approaching top form and was fastest rider in 58m. Patrick won road championship honours in last year's 100 miles race and on his present showing may again be expected to give a good performance. The Lynndale Club's combined senior and junior race over a course from New Lynn to Oratia and back, 16 miles, proved most popular for 30 riders started. One of the limit riders, H. Hawke, 13m, a junior, won after a hard ride over the final stages when H. Holton, 4m 30s, was fast overhauling him. K. Hankin, 455, rode well to beat C. Gooder, scr., by ten seconds for time honours. Hankin took 38m lis for the hilly course. L. J. Foubister, lm 30s, won the Papatoetoe Club's 20 miles event in a hard finish with M. Kara, 4m 30s. Foubister is a brother to R. G. Foubister, the 1932 , Olympic Games representative. One of the three brothers, S. E. Pinfold, scr., was successful in making the best time with the record figures of 55m 555. Tbis was a lm 2s reduction of the old record. A. Eli a has been very successful in the Beachhaven Club's races this season. He secured his third victory in last Saturday's 20 miles race off 5m 30s. B. Evans, 2m 455, was again tho fastest rider. Tfcp time, 61m 31s, was good for such a strenuous course.
