CHILDREN'S HANDWORK
KOWHAI SCHOOL DISPLAY EXHIBITION IN OTTAWA Striking evidence of the value of fostering children's talent in handcrafts is provided in an exhibition of ,york by pupils of the Kowhai Intermediate School, now on view in one of the classrooms. The exhibition, which covers a wide range of handwork.' from delicate penmanship to the construction of home utensils from kerosene tins, will shortly be sent to Ottawa schools for display. Last year, a similar exhibition, th<» work of Ottawa school children, was sent to the Dominion. Before despatch to Canada, the work of the New Zealand* school 'children will be inspected bv Mr. C. M. Croft, Canadian Trade Commissioner, and a special exhibition has > for the forthcoming school holidays, so that teachers from the: country,.will have an opportunity to see the class ol work done by pupils of the Kowhai School. Unusual ingenuity and skill have been employed in the execution of the various exhibits.. Woodwork entries, showing intricate workmanship, cover a wide range, while various shovels, coal scuttles and other utensils for the home show to what uses a kerosene tin can be devoted with the aid of ingenuity and workmanship. An outstanding exhibit in the art section is a display of cleverly-executed poster-work, the majority friom original designs. There are also splendid examples of map-drawing, geometrical designs in colour and linoleum prints, of which one of the most striking and amusing is a caricature of Mr. Bernard Shaw. Among other interesting exhibits are a series of pen-and-ink and pencil drawings showing the evolution of shipping. There also are examples of monochrome work and shorthand and typewriting.
