NORTHCOTE BOROUGH
Ferry service complaint REPLY BY THE COMPANY The Northcote Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. It. Martin, presiding. Intimation of the council's intention to tar-seal the shoulders of Queen i Street this year is to be given to the Post and Telegraph Department, with .ft suggestion that any underground work at road intersections should bo put in hand prior to this being done. The waterworks engineer reported that 3,323, 500 gallons of water had been used during July. The surface of Lake Pupuke had risen 6iin. in that period to 4ft. lin. below high tide mark, which is lin. lower than at the feame date last year. Opportunity is to be taken of the slack period of the year to carry out repairs at the pumping station. With regard to the suggestion that the steamer Ngoiro was inadequate for the rush trips, a letter from the secretary of the Devonport Ferry Company pointed out that the Ngoiro was the fastest steamer in the service and recent tallies showed that the number travelling on the heaviest trip of the day was not half of the number the boat was licensed by the Marino Department to carry. No action was taken in regard to the request of the Institute of Architects that the minimum height of stud Ifor dwelling houses be Bft. instead of 6ft. to 10ft. The Mayor stated that owing to the Birkenhead men discontinuing tho contract excavation, work at the Hobson--Ville air' base, there had since been tack of transport. The Northcote men sustenance in the meantime.
