LISTENERS' CLUB
PAST YEAR'S ACTIVITIES ELECTION OF OFFICERS A surplus of £34 of income over expenditure for the past year was shown in the financial statement presented at the third annual meeting of the United Listeners' Club last evening. The president, Mr. A. Thompson, presided over an attendance of about 109 members. The principal item of revenue for the year was membership fees, which totalled £ll2. The report, which, with the balance sheet, was adopted, stated that an extension of nine hours a week at the main Y stations had been secured. It had been agreed to support B stations in resisting the policy of suppressing them, but the desired result was not achieved in the absence of a combined effort by the stations concerned.
So far the Broadcasting Board had not been induced to alter its policy in regard to frequencies, to avoid the "blanketing" of Australian and other stations. An improvement had taken place in the standard of programmes, however, although much remained to be done.
The report mentioned that the club was endeavouring to influence an extension of the limits at present set on what was termed "controversial matter." It was claimed that if matter could be printed there should be no arbitrary bar to its being given over tho air. The report also urged the direct representation of set owners on the Broadcasting Board. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. A. Thompson; vicepresidents, Messrs. Percy Landells and G. Walker; secretary, Mr. H. White; treasurer, Mr. H. Dixon; committee, Messrs. H. B. Arthur, J. W. H. Martin, T. Walsh, N. T. Ganley, N. A. Jamieson; honorary solicitor, Mr. B. P. Hunt.
