SIRES OF THE SEASON THREE AT MARDELLA STUD SON OF SUCCESSFUL VALAIS Sons of Valais, notably Heroic, leading sire for the past two seasons, have been doing well at the stud in Australia and this will no doubt attract attention to Vaals (19), who will again be located at the Mardclla Stud, Otahuhu, this season. Vaals is the only son of Valais at the stud in Now Zealand and the first of his stock are expected to race this season. Vaals has two strains of the famous Bend Or blood in his pedigree through Bona Vista and Martagon, whose progeny were fine stayers. There is also a doubling of Hampton, together with twq lines of Musket and a strain of the unbeaten St. Simon. Vaals was a good performer himself and represents a most successful sire line through Bend Or, Bona Vista, Cyleime, Cicero and Valais. Besides Vaals, Tea Tray and Bronze Eaglo will also bo located at the Mardella Stud. Tea Tray (1) is a son of The Tetrarch, who was unbeaten, from Good and Gay, and traces back to the illustrious Paraffin, ancestress of many notable performers. Tea Tray has proved himself a aire of early speed and among the numerous smart performers ho has sired arc Tea Trader, La Poupee, Koyal Tea. Kiosk, Tankard, Spoon, Lady Nan and Refresher. Tea Tray is standing at the moderate feo of 15 guineas, and, as he is a proved sir?, ho should again command good patronage. Bronze Eagle (9) is only a young horse, having been foaled in 1028. Bronze Eaglo vas a brilliant racehorse, his victories including the New Zealand Derby, the Great Northern Derby and tho G. G. Stead Cup, and he is the holder of the STew Zealand record of 2.2 4-5 for a mile and a-quarter. Son of Brazen, who wis by Phalaris. and the Eudorus mare Torfrida. BSmzo Eaglo is a handsome horse with good breeding to support his undoubted quality as a racehorse and his services are likely to be freely availed of.

KING LU AT TE AROHA Until last season the possessor of the record for seven furlongs at Ellerslie, King Lu was not only a fine racehorse, but ho was also one of the best-looking horses racing in his day in the Dominion. A really fine individual, ho has made a good start, at the stud with very limited opportunities. Last season ho was represented by only eight horses, and six of them won, a fine testimonial to a young sire. King Lu (2) was by Lucullus, son of Ard Patrick, fr»m Shower Gold, by Marble Arch from Merry Nif, by Merry Hampton, son of Hampton, from Aroma, by Craig Millar, so that in addition to his other fine qualities he also has good breeding to recommend him. King Lu will be located at Mr. R. B. Hines' property at Tc Aroha West, and ho is standing at the moderate fee of 15 guineas. THE ACE AT MATAMATA One of tho few representatives of the successful Hampton sire line who has been represented on the New Zealand turf pf recent years. The Aco (1) haß proved his ability to sire srood winners, and among the most notable of hi 3 progeny have been 1< ast Passaso. winner of the Auckland Cup and the New Zealand Cup. and Waterlme. the line of Hampton has received a great impetus in recent years and [he Ace. son of Buyardo and grandson of Bay Ronald, has done something to bring if> forward in tho Dominion. The Ace is to be located at Matnmata this season, and in view of the proved ability of his stock ho should have a successful ecason. NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK PREPARATION OF JUMPERS [I'JIOJI OUR OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH. Thursday A high southerly wind had dried the New Plymouth tracks very considerably for trie work this morning, when both the plough and the trial grasp were freely used, (.here was not as much galloping as on luesday, most of the horses being restricted to paceIlluminate wan eiven solid pace-work. Ho was schooled yesterday, but his display was not up to his ÜBiial standard. General Quex and Taliuriuioi strode out in good style ovor a circuit. , , „ * i Ngareta (H. Dulieu) and Razor (M. Pine) jumped five steeplechase fences, including the double. Ngareta gave her usual smooth display, but Razor was inclined to bo slovenly. However, it was his first schooling and he will probably do better next time. Count Lendroff worked freely, on the plough. He is coming to hand quickly and should be in cood fettle at the end of the Pote're again worked pleasingly when she finished in front of Adept and Davistock over a round, the last fivp furlongs taking 1.8. This daughter of Erie has made solid progress lately. . Spender and Hie hunter Ngapnpa occupied 40s for three furlongs. Nganapa showed a nice turn of speed foi a hunter. The thrce-vear-ohl Aussio Kit was allotted cbbv pace-work. He is not being hurried and is unlikely to fulfil his engagemente in the Wanganui Guineas next month.
