ROAD RECONSTRUCTION
WHANGAREI TO HIKURANGI HIGHWAY BOARD'S SUBSIDY [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Friday Tlic matter of the Whangarei-Hiku-rangi main highway was again discussed by the Whangarei County Council today. The chairman, Mr. L. Webb, had recently advised the Main Highways Board that it was not likely that the council would proceed with the reconstruction and scaling of the road unless the board agreed to provide free money for reconstruction.
The board to-day advised the coun- | cil that it bad decided to grant a £3 for £1 subsidy. The board stated that when the offer of free money was made in 1928 a higher class of penetration type of pavement was proposed. The council passed a resolution protesting against the action of the board in laying down altered conditions. It was reported that a minimum of 100 tons of coal a week was being carried from Kaeo to Hikurangi by road. The council had power under the Public Works Act and the heavy motor vehicle regulations to stop traffic which was considered injurious to roads. Messrs. L. Webb and F. Elliott were appointed to confer with the interested parties and the Transport Licensing Authority in an endeavour to have the coal carried by the railways. Mr. A. Clarke moved that the Tahere-Horabora Road be restricted until December 1 for heavy traffic up to 2J tons laden weight. He said firewood firms had flagrantly broken tho regulation and had greatly damaged tho road and broken ,and damaged bridges. The motion was carried.
