WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
Activities of women's institutes are reported as follows: Aratoro.—Eight exhibits to represent the institute at the Te Kuiti Winter Show were chosen at a recent meeting. Thrift articles was the competition, and Miss Crozier gained most points, with a work basket and table, made from an old cheese crate. Mrs. Hoburn was second with a wool quilt. Horotiu. —The second birthday party was held, 200 people being present, including visitors from neighbouring institutes. The cake was made and iced by members. The retiring president was the recipient of a brass jardiniere, and the two secretaries were presented with a brass vase each. Horsham Downs.—A profitable hour was spent watching a demonstration, of tho uses of the attachments of a sewing machine. The roll call, "My Favourite Author," revealed a taste for good literature. Musical items were enjoyed. Te Pahu. —Mrs. Ziman, of Cambridge, gave a talk on her recent trip abroad. Mrs. Lapwood demonstrated reed loom weaving, and displayed reed loom articles. The competitions were for a decorated bowl, won by Mrs. Bollard, and something made from felt hats, won by Mrs. Smith. Waiterimu. Demonstrations were given of rug and picture making, and a violet competition was won by Mrs. J. Grundy.
