MATCH AGAINST NORTHLAND FAST CONTEST ANTICIPATED SPEEDY VISITING PLAYERS The second Rugby League representative match of the season will he played at Carlaw Park to-morrow afternoon, when Auckland will meet Northland. Both teams are reported as being very powerful, and spectacular football is anticipated. The Auckland team includes several young players who are taking part in representative football for the first time. The absence of the Richmond players has given the selectors a good opportunity of finding new talent. On a dry day, the Auckland backs can he expected to plav attractive football. Speed should be a feature of the back division. The assistance of R. Hardgrave, who is taking part in his first representative match since returning to Auckland, should be valuable to the home backs. The Auckland

forwards are powerful scrummagers and are capable of playing fast, open football. Followers of the game will remember the fine display Northland gave against Auckland at Carlaw Park two seasons ago, when only three points separated the teams. The Northland side on this occasion is expected to give an even better exhibition. Included in the Northland team are many well-known players of fully representative calibre. 11. Hamilton, Berghnm, E. Meyer and C. White have previously played for the North Island. Both the backs and forwards of the visiting team are said to be very speedy. The Northland team will arrive by special train this evening and will stay at the Hotel Auckland. Mr. P. Rogers, of Auckland, has been appointed to referee the match. Thursday Before a good mid-week crowd in the Western Park. Taranaki scored a lastminuto win over Richmond (Auckland) by 23 points to 22. The first half favoured Richmond (14—11). but tho local team rallied during the lateT stages, Arnold landing a penalty goal right on time. Although Richmond missed three certain tries through infringing at a critical moment, they failed to produce their best form, Cooke, who played fullback in the first spell and fiveeighths in the second half, scoring two fine tries. The other backs lacked thrust. Taranaki played better during the second half, having slightly the better of it territorially. Priar drop-kicked a field goal. The scorers for Taranaki were Hunt (2), McDonald, Lewis, Arnold (tries), Arnold (three goals), Priar (a field goal). Richmond's scorers were Cooke (2), Bxoadhead, McNeill, Tetley, Lawless (tries), Satherley, Millicich (goals).

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL INTER-ISLAND ARRANGEMENTS. The New Zealand Rugby League Council, Mr Cyril Snedden presiding, last night readopted arrangements made at the last meeting and negatived by notice of motion, and the North Island v. South Island match will be held as originally proposed at Carlaw Park on September 1. Nominations of players were received from the three South Island leagues, which uotified complete concurrence in the council's plana and the southern selector. Mr. C. R. Hall (West Coast), was. instructed to act. Nominations are being called from IVorth Island leagues. Mr. A. T. McClyinont (Auckland) being North selector. .The teams will be announced, on August 18. , The Canterbury Rugby League s tour to West Coast to play the challenge match for the Northern Union Cup on August IS was approved . , ~ rn , . Upon the application of the iaranaki league permission was granted the lnglewood club team to play at Ngaruawahia. The Auckland league's action in regjrd to the transfer of Mnrist Old Boys players under certain conditions to the Mt. Albert Club, which was reported to intend entering a team for the Rookie Rooster competition, was approved. . The English league wrote advising several amendment to playing rules and it was decided to refer the details to the New Zea laud Referees Association and to all leagues with a view to adoption for next season.
