CREMATION

Sir, —Mr. McCallum, 1 think, rather misses the point I wish to emphasise, which is that cremation undoubtedly being the most hygienic method of disposing of the discarded body, it follows that more encouragement should be given to the poorer section of our citizens to avail themselves of it. The cost is within the figure he quotes, viz., £2O, as I have been at pains to verify, but may I ask, does he imagine this to come within the means of the thousands who are now existing on relief work or reduced pensions, and would it be right that they should spend this sum, when the money is so much more needed for the living? Does not the small number of Auckland cremations possibly testify to this? All unnecessary adjuncts should be eliminated to bring it within the reach of all, and why not cast the ashes to the four winds of heaven? A.M.
