AIDING NEW INDUSTRIES

SUBSIDY OPPOSED OPINION OF BUSINESS MEN The decision of the Government to apply £250,000 from the Unemployment Fund to the subsidising of new industries was criticised at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday, the general opinion of members being that any surplus of unemployment funds should be applied to the relief of unemployment taxation. In a letter from the Unemployment Board it was stated that no special regulations had been evolved as yet regarding the administration of this particular section of the, fund, but that each application for assistance would receive consideration on its merits. It would be necessary for any person or firm desiring assistance in the establishment, of a new industry to furnish full particulars of the proposals, together with detailed estimates of the establishment costs, and the estimated number of employees who would bo engaged in tho industry should it be established. A resolution expressing opposition to the board's proposal will be sent to the Minister or Finance, Mr. Coates, and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Savage.
