POPULAR GIRL CONTEST

NORTHCOTE V. BIRKENHEAD SUM OF £337 RAISED During the past four months a "popular girl contest" has been in—progress throughout St. Mary's Catholic parish. A series of functions has been held by the supporters of the respective candidates. The competition was finalised last evening, when a social gathering was held in the King's Theatre at Xortlicote and was largely attended. This was organised by the combined committee of the candidates and comprised Mrs. M. Bowles, who wore a frock of glack guipure lace; Mrs. W. Sampson, in black ensemble; Mrs. James Mitchell, pale green windswept crepe; Mrs. C. J. W. Taylor, black ruarocain and bridge coat; Mrs. W. Healey, black ring velvet; Mrs. E. G. Bailey, black lace and georgette; Mrs. Clivo Sampson, black chiffon velvet; Mrs. Fred Grant, blue niarocain ensemble; Mrs. P. Dcrricksou, black niarocain and bridge coat; Mrs. T. Boyd, figured niarocain; Mrs. E. .1. Sinel, black georgette; Miss Alice Gifford, black georgette; Miss Monica Healey, white satin, blue ring velvet font; M iss Ituby Gilford, wine lace; Miss Joyce Howies, white angclskin and white fur coat; Mis.. L. Kilbride, black lace and ring velvet coat; Miss Xellio Healey, tartan taffeta; Miss Sybil Hartigan, pale blue georgette; Miss Molly Healey, white silk and pink coatee; Miss Noel Macdonald, black lace, and .Miss Amy Healey, embossed green georgette. Tlicy were assisted by Messrs. W. Healey, W. Sampscrii, ('. J. W. Taylor, M. Bailey, Clivo Sampson, L. Howies, John Grant and H. G. Holland. The contest, however,'resolved itself into one between the two districts comprised within the parish. The Northcotc candidate was Miss Marv Bowles, who wore a frock of midnight blue ring velvet, while the Birkenhead representative was Miss Zolma Sampson, who was frocked in cherry chiffon velvet and sequinncd crepe. The third candidate, .Miss Eileen Xeben, unavoidably retired early in the contest. She wore a frock of burgundy, crinkled erepe. Attended bv their flower girls, Shirley Sampson, Katherin Mays and Dawn Miiins, the three candidates were seated on the stage when the result was announced by the Rev. Father J. T. Taylor as follows : M iss Zolma Sampson, 39,671 votes; Miss May Howies, 29,337; Miss Eileen Xeben, 8478. The majority for the Birkenhead candidate was 10,334. The total votes numbered 77,486 and represented a cash aggregate of £337 3s 2d.

Miss Sampson's victory was received by presentations of bouquets and the gathering singing "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow." Similar floral and musical honours were accorded the other candidates and presentations wore made made by the Mayoress, Mrs. R. Martin, on behalf of the committee and others. The Rev. Father M. Shore, of Takapuna, was present.
