CITRUS FRUIT GROWING
RETENTION OF EMBARGO NECESSARY TO INDUSTRY [from our own correspondent] TAURANGA. Wednesday A deputation from the Tauranga Citrus Fruit Growers' Association, Limited, waited on the Chamber of Commerce last night, and referred to propaganda circulated against New Zealand lemons. It was stated by the deputation that the association's average time for lemons in the curing room was from six weeks to two months. Lemons of various grades were exhibited to the meeting and were cut to show a substantial juice content. Tauranga lomons had boen compared in Christchurch with American, Italian and Australian, and declared by brokers to bo equal or bettor than tho imported. It was resolved to send a telegram to the Minister of Customs stating that the propaganda against Dominion lomons was grossly unfair and that a Government inquiry into marketing methods would be welcomed by the Tauranga growers. A resolution was also carried expressing tho chamber's concern at tho agitation in some parts of the Dominion to have tho embargo on Australian citrus fruit lifted, which would mean a serious blow to tho Dominion's citrus fruit industry. The chamber was of opinion that the time had arrived when tho marketing of the Dominion's product should be controlled by Government regulations. A copy of tho resolution will be fdrwarded to the Hon. C. E. Macmillan.
