GENERAL ELECTION
MR. STEVENS STANDS OUT SPLIT IN COUNTRY PARTY (Received July 24, 11.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 24 The Premier of New South Wales, Mr. B. S. Stevens, announced to-day that he did not propose to submit himself as a candidate for the forthcoming Federal general election. Concerning the dispute in the ranks of the Country Party in Victoria it was announced in Sydney to-day that as there is no hope of healing the breach between the Victorian branch and the Central Council of the Australian Country Party an entirely new organisation will be formed in Victoria. This will consist of thoso who are prepared to abide by the principles of the Australian Country Party. A message from Melbourne states that the deputy-Premier of Victoria, Mr. R. G. Menzies, lias agreed to contest the Kooyong seat, formerly held by Mr. J. G. Latham. He will take a conspicuous part in the Federal election campaign.
