NEW DEVIATION
TAUPO TO NATIONAL PARK NOW OPEN FOR TRAFFIC The' reconstruction of the TaupoNational Park highway, south of Tongariro Bridge, was advanced a further stage on Monday, when the deviation on the northern slopes of Mount Tongariro, at the fringe of the busli, was opened. About five miles in length, the deviation shortens the through distance by about four miles, and saves motorists travelling by the former road, which followed a tortuous and narrow course through the manuka as far as tho Otukou native village. The new route, which represents tho third side of a triangle, does not touch tho village, and brings the traveller two miles nearer the Ketatahi Blowhole on the slopes of Tongariro. The Herotea Hill also has been eliminated. A feature of the deviation is tho splendid scenery. Beautiful views arc obtainable of Lakes Roto Aira and Taupo, besides a nearer view of the Ketatahi Blowhole. Tho Kaimanawa Ranges' also can be seen. The highest point reached on the road is 3030 ft.
