HAWERA ACTIVITIES

CARFEX WORKING WELL GALLOP BY FRIESLAND [from our own correspondent] HAWERA, Monday Argument, sold to Mr. M. Millar for 250 guineas during the progress of the Trt-ntliam meeting, was not brought back to Hawera, K. Urough leaving liim at Bulls, where he goes into A. E. Neale's stables. Argument developed a severe cold, which prevented him from starting on the concluding day at 'ircntliam. Cinpey did not do well on the trip to Trt-ntham and gave his injured leg a knock, causing it to fill badly again. Ho has been turned out and it is doubtful whether ho will raco again, as ho appears to have 1 jat a great deal of his dash. M. Conway intends taking Benedictine to Awapuni for the Manawatu meeting 011 Saturday.

Several Hawera horses are being prepared for the Taranaki and Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club's combined meeting next month. Carfox and Silver Wings have been sprinted lately and both have been hitting out nicely. Carfex should tako somo beating in his early engagements next season. One of the best sprints recorded locally lately was performed by O. Cox's rising three-year-old Frieslaud, who beat T. Fryer's maiden Colossal by a length over three furlongs in 311s. Friesland, whosu early track efforts were not impressive, showed great improvement. Splint trouble caused Friesland to be put aside somo time ago, but 110 ha 3 made good progress sinco returning from his spell. Tho rising two-year-olda Link Divine and Pairi'ux sprinted a couplo of furlonpe recently in 25}s, both shaping satisfactorily.

Golden Hair is getting througji plenty of steady pace work. She looks in beautiful order and should be in first-class fettle for the spring campaign in Australia. St. Clara continues to do plenty of solid pace work and is ready to bo sent along seriously when required. Tho two-year-old filly by Diacquenod from Moorfield, dam of Crown Area, Plateau and Gasfield, is getting through her preliminary e.\ercises in good style. Although not very big, she is built on speedy lines and promises to go fast. Tho filly is a stable companion of The Tiger, who is also accomplishing his work very satisfactorily. Ruri and Harvest Moon, were given a turn over the schooling hurdles on Saturday, when Stanchion gave them a lead, and they acquitted themselves well. Surveyor has sired somo good jumpers, notably Make Up and Landmark, and Ruri may be another useful one. Haivest Moon is a splendid type for hurdling. Golden Promise has been an absentee from the tracks for a few days owing to contracting a cold, but resumed this morning. ' J. Fryer has been giving Radiant Star solid work. Radiant Star iB still a handful to manage, but his trainer is confident that travelling and racing will settle him down. Rollovant is worlung much better with tho softer tracks. Oriel, the other member of Fryer's team booked for Australia, has been kept at easy work. Ho has put on condition and is looking well. Silk Sox has resumed steady work and is likely to be schooled early. , Richfield and Autumn Leaf are regular workers and tho former is to bo got ready for hurdle racing.
