FIFTY YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of July 25, 1884: Designs of a road bridge over the Cemetery Gully were forwarded by tha city engineer at the ordinary meeting of the City Council last night. There are six spans of SO feet each. The floor of the bridge is IS feet wide. The estimated cost is £3500. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee for report. Dr. Hochstetter, whose death has just been announced, was well known to tha residents of this country through his geological exploration of a large part of it and irom his descriptive work on New Zealand, which still holds the first place as a popular, reliable account of the physical features, geology and natural history of the colony. An Austrian by birth, he early attained eminence as a geologist and scientific explorer. He -arrived at Auckland in tha Novara at the close of 1858. The vessel's stay was limited to a fortnight, but Hochstetter was easily induced to remain behind, the Government engaging to supply him with the means of making a geological reconnaissance of the country and to bear the expense of his return to Europe. It is sufficient proof of Hoclistetter's ability that during his short stay of nine 'months he was able to lay down the main features of its geological construction and to bring together an immense amount of information concerning the natural history of the country. The second cricket test at Lord's, tha Australians v. England, ended in a win for the All England Eleven by an innings and five runs. The Australians second innings closed for 145.
