ROWING TITLES

NEXT DOMINION REGATTA APPLICATION BY AUCKLAND There is every possibility of Auckland being the venue of the New Zealand rowing championships during the forthcoming season, as, in consequence of representations made by the chairman of the Auckland Rowing Association executive, Mr. A. C. Norden, while in Wellington, the local association has applied to the New Zealand Council for permission to stage such. Tho date submitted is Saturday, February 2, which should ensure an excellent response from southern crews. This is in view of the annual Anniversary Day regatta on the Waikato River at Hamilton on the preceding Tuesday. The only occasion on which a national championship regatta has been staged in Auckland city was on January -8, 1899, the venue being Takapuna Bench. Incidentally the well-known old paddle steamer Wakatcre was employed hs tho official flagship. Besides local crews representatives from Wellington and Picton were ..present, while keen disappointment was expressed at the absence of Canterbury and Otngo crews. Picton won the senior fours. Star (Wellington) the double sculls, Wellington the pair-oar and Mr. P. Grahame, well known on the North Shore, was successful as a member of the North Shore Club in annexing the singles sculling title. Tho officials in charge included Messrs. T. E. N. Crombie (secretary), T. U. Wells (chairman) and E. W. Burgess (representing the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association). The last-named also acted as starter and umpire. _ . Last season, in view of tour local club's jubilees being attained, a general confidence that the chimpionships would be allotted to this city prevailed, but, although the AucMand application hid the vmpn'V of the majoritv of the dcl."gn A os, it was ruled out of order on a technical breach of the rules, it being late in reaching Wellington. Tn eon -ore-ice, the eh ampion shins wore ' Allotted to Moriborough, which was the only applicant. There is every justification, therefore, in Auckland once more applying.
