MOUNT EDEN AFFAIRS

WATER BILL EXPENSES CHANGE .OF STREET NAME The expense incurred in connection with the presentation of the Auckland Provincial Water Board Bill, 1934, was mentioned at a meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council last night. The Mayor, Mr. T. McNab, presided. Tho council adopted a recommenda- j tion that the action of the Mayor in 1 agreeing that tho council's share of tho i estimated cost of presenting the bill, j about '£7o on a population basis, i should be approved. It had been re- \ ported that the Mayors of the sub- . urban boroughs had convened a num- j ber of meetings in connection with the matter, and had conferred ith the Auckland City Council regarding the formation of a Water Board. No reply having been received, the outside authorities agreed to deposit a formal bill, which was forwarded on July 13 to come before Parliament during the present session. The solicitors acting for the authorities estimated the ex- j penses to be £250 should the bill be unsuccessful; should the petition sue- ■ ceed, the expenses would bo paid by j the Water Board A petition and several letters oppos- j ing the proposal to change the name of Landscape Road AVest to Boundary j Road were received. It was agreed to j reply to tho petitioners that, should I they decide upon a name suitable to ! the majority, the council would be pre- j pared to consider the suggested title. j Reporting on a copy of the .Auckland Transport Board Empowering Local Bill received by the council, the ; town clerk, Mr. H. Gribble, .said that, i in respect of No. 3 clause, no altera- ! tion to the existing number of repre- j sentatives on thi board of any con- ; stituency would take place until the i next succeeding election, meaning that, . should Mount Albert or Mount Eden j amalgamate with the city, the repre- j sentatives would still hold office until j the election to be held in .1939, pro- i vided, of course, that any amalgnma- j . tion did not take place before May, i 1935. ! "We are verv lucky to get out. of i it," said the Mayor, when a notifiea- ; tion was received from Mr. W. ,R. Mc- ; Kean, S.M., chairman of the Assessment Court, fixing the sum of lOOgns. ■ as the cost of making the valuation j list for the borough, directed by him j to be made in pursuance of the Rating Act, 1925. The letter was received. Satisfaction was expressed at the quality of the work carried out in the Calgary Street-Halesowen Avenue sewer, for which 300 ft. of open trenches had already been constructed. It was stated that standard wages were being paid to the men engaged on the work, which was considered to be admirable in every respect.
