REMOVAL OF PARAPET • 1 " 1 - & Parapets on city buildings are considered dangerous in earthquakes, but from what occurred in Willis Street, Wellington, tho other afternoon, it seems that their removal can also be dangerous to citizens. Workmen were removing the parapet from a building, and were lowering masses of jnasonrv into a waiting lorry by means of a rope sling. One piece, which weighed about half a hundredweight, slipped out of tho sling, and fell with a thud on to tho roadway clear of tho lorry and only a foot from the side channel.' Had anyone stepped off the pavement in that spot at that moment it wpUld. have serious injury, if not dciith.
