WORLD'S BEST SPA
VALUE OF IIQTOBUA UNIQUE ATTRACTIONS AMERICAN DOCTOR'S PRAISE "As ;i natural spa, Rotorua, is unequalled in any part of the world, said Dr. H. Garcelon, of Arrowhead Springs, California, who roturned to Auckland yesterday after a short tour of Iho North Island, "famous spas in Europe and America have two or tlirco different waters. l?otorim has them all." Dr. Garcelon is in charge of the metabologieal clinic at Arrowhead Springs, the largest, spa in the west of the United States, where treatment is av a i table in mineral mud baths, mineral springs and steam eaves. There is a variety of sulphur and arsenical waters. "As J. say, Rotorun has everything," Dr. Garcelon continued. "Probably the nearest approach to it as a spa is l'iscanie, in Hungary. There is even a. natural water similar to the famous NauJieim bath irt Germany—ono water which makes Nauheim a leading spa for heart cases. The ftachcl, too, is ;i most stimulating bath and should be of great advantage in dealing with cases of arthritis.
"Tho work m hydrotherapy at Jiotorua is excellent, and, although some of the facilities for specialised treatment may be absent, the spa is well abreast of modern developments in balneology. Dr. J. .1). Campbell Duncan is recognised as being one of tho most capable balneologists in the world.
"One hears of Rotorua as a summer tourist resort, with its thermal activity and native life, but one hears comparatively. little of its unique attractions as a health resort and spa. This is a defect in publicity. Continental spas, which have not half the attributes of Kotorua, find that extensive advertising pays them over and over again. Kotorua should be advertised not only ns a holiday resort, but as tho greatest spa in the world." Dr. Garcelon added that if l?otorua was to retain its popularity with visitors from abroad, efforts would have to be made to improve the hotel accommodation in some respeet3. Americans, particularly, were used to having their rooms centrally heated during the winter, and also expected private bathrooms in hotels. "Your Tourist Department should warn visitors that Kotorua in winter can bo very cold," he added. Dr. Garcelon, who is accompanied by Mrs. Garcelon, will leave on his return to 'San Francisco by the Mariposa on Saturday.
