MARIST IMPROVES

CLOSE CALL FOR RICHMOND Although the No. 2 ground at Carlaw Park was a quagmire, the game between Marist and Richmond was particularly well contested, and the former caused a surprise by leading at one stage by seven points to nil. It was not until Cooke was moved to five-eightha that Richmond took the offensive. The game was chiefly a battle between the two sets of forwards. Marist more than licld its opponents and in the first half was clearly the superior set. / The score. 13 points to 10, was not a true indication of tho game. Richmond w(i3 awarded a dciibtful penalty goal. The Richmond backs were favoured with a sooci share, of the ball, and. with Cooke at five-eighths, dominated play in the second half. Marist was by no means a beaten side, and near the end its forwards made great efforts to reduce the margin. Richmond did not field its best thirteen, being without the services of Satherley, Mitchell and McNeil. Early in the game Mincham nbo was taken off with a leg injury. llowever, diarist put up a eplondid light and with o.riy luck might have won. Cooke's play at five-eighths was a feature of tho game. Without him Richmond would have boen a badly beaten aide. Cooke was in every movement and each time the ball was kicked he showed uncanny anticipation in positional play. Many times Cooke got Richmond out of difficulties by great line kicking. Satherley. who replaced Cooke at fullback, played a sound game. Both Pi-pntice and Powell got through a lot of useful work. Dennett played a dashing game on the wing. Fletcher was prominent on attack. Lawless was easily the best of the forwards. .Tenkinson and Telfo'Vi n'so played well. Campbell, at fullback for Marist, played a sound gam-i. never once failing to field the hull cleanly. Brisbane played a splendid spoiling game. Clover was perhaps the In--t of tin- Marist backs, his tackling being of a high standard. Both Laird and Keatie played outstanding games among the forwards., The hitter kicked at times with splendid judgment Bakalich and Clarke were always prominent in the loose. For Richmond, Bennett, Cooke and -Tenkinson scored tries, and Cooke converted one try and kicked a penalty goal. For MarisU Clarke and Smith scored a try each. Campbell kicked a penalty goal and converted a try. Mr. S. Billman was referee. LOWER GRADE RESULTS - Reserve Grade.—City, 3. Newton. 0; Pon•onby, 8, Devonport, 0; Richmond. 6, Marist, 0.
