ASSOCIATION WORK The social hall of the Y.W.C.A. Hostel was filled on the occasion of a social, held to welcome the new secretary, Miss Bates, of New Plymouth. Opportunity was also taken to farewell Miss M. Cole, of Auckland, who has been engaged in association activities in the district for some weeks past. Mrs. J. N. McCarrol, the president of the Whangarei branch, presided. During the evening items were given by Mesdames H. W. Crawford, S. Blanshard, N. E. Crimp. Supper was provided, after which dancing took place. The committee of the Whangarei branch of the Plunket Society sought from the Whangarei County Council a contribution to its fund for the financial year. In moving, that the council renew its grant of £25, Mr. J. A. S. Walker said the society was doing excellent work throughout the district. He contended that if the health of the children were preserved it would be easier to maintain the health of the people in later years. The council decided to renew the grant of £25. An amendment that the amount be £ls was defeated by four votes to three. A children's party was held in the Trinity Hall, under the auspices of the Trinity Congregational Church, to mark the opening of a new primary and kitchen. The Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, in opening the new wing congratulated the church authorities on their foresight in the completion of the original plan. The grand march was led off by the "Pied Piper" Mr. R. Taylor. The fancydress costumes were varied and beautiful. Mesdames W. Jones, Stewart Wright and R. Stevenson acted as judges and prizes were awarded as follows: —Valerie Woods, who represented a. "Manchurian Princess"; Yola Swindells, as "Robin Hood"; Cliff Hutchison, as "Blacksmith"; Coleen Moore, as "Miss Go to Bed"; R. Wood, as "Old English Page"; and Mavis Boucher, as "Spring."
