GROWERS OF TOBACCO
NEW DUTIES RESENTED RECONSIDERATION URGED [BV TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] KELSON, Saturday At a meeting of 400 tobacco-growers and others at Motueka it was stated that the new duties on tobacco would kill the industry, deprive hundreds of people of their livelihood, and also throw hundreds of workers out of employment. Mr. K. J. Holyoake (GovMotueka) said this was the fight of their lives, and if they lost it meant the end of the industry.
A resolution was carried emphatically protesting against the new duties, and urgently requesting reconsideration. A strong representative deputation is to be sent to Wellington to place the case for tlio industry before the Minister.
