LUKE'S The first series of gnnies in the Auckland Hockey Association's competition for the Dcvonport Shield was played on soft grounds at Jleniuera on Saturday. North Shore, which finished at the bottom of the championship for the Davis Cup, caused a surprise by leading the winners, Somerville, 2-0 at half-time. Howovcr, Somerville rallied in the second half and won by 3 goals to 2. ' High scoring was general during the day. Among the scores in lower grade and ladies' matches were totals of 15, 13, 10, 9, 8 and 7. WIN FOR UNIVERSITY ; WEAKENED WESLEY SIDE Although. University drew, with Wesley when the teams last met, it had the better of the game on Saturday; The Wesley team Was considerably wepkened' by the loss of several of its regular players, and this was largely, responsible for its . defeat. Play hovered in mid field for a brief period until Wesley broke away. Brown cleared, and the University forwards worked thpir way down the field to the edge of' the circle' 'and ■Sulcliffe, in goal, had to save a" hard shot from Don. University, continued t<s press round the circle, and eventually A. Broun passed to Floyd, who flicked the ball into the net. Wesley moved to the attack and was conceded a comer,,' but University, cleared, and eventually A, Broun headed for. the Weslay goal; but was beaton off. Up-and-down iplay followed until Watson put his forwards in motion. They reached tlio circle and, from a penalty corner, A. Broun sent in a hard shot. Sutcliffe stopped, but failed to clear, and N. Broun ran in and pushed the ball over the line. Soon after Sutcliffe had a narrow escape when Floyd made a chance shot which just failed. Wesley rallied, and Kiff had an unsuccessful shot. Fraser took the ball down the wing beforo centring to Floyd, whose shot was kicked out by Sutcliffe, A. Broun collected the rebound and netted. Wesley broke away and Kiff sent tluj ball into the net, but was offside. University continued to attack, and Floyd scored. The score at half-time was:—University, 4; Wesley, 0. Both teamß attacked in turn on the resumption, and Don took a shot which rose high over the net. Wesley worked down tho left flank, but offside play spoiled its chances. A free-hit gained some ground for University. The Wesley forward .line, however, made a determined effort and kept play in its opponents' territory for ' some time, Iviff eventually scoring the team's first goal. Kiff and Chapman made a nice rur. on the right, but Pickens cleared and sent the ball to the other end of tho field. A fine run by Philpott ended in his centring to Beere, and exciting moments followed, with Brown attempting to hold off Beere and Kiff. Finally the ball was pushed over the lino just outside the post. .University had the better of the game for a time and Don sent a nice pass to Floyd, 'who scored. Wesley rallied nnd pressed round tho circle, Chapman sending in a nice shot from a' difficult angle. Soon after he made another fine run and ccntrod well, but lacked support. University broke away and Floyd spored from a mejee. Chapman led the Wesley forwards in a spectacular run down the field before being well stopped by Robinson. University was attacking when the game ended with the score:—University, 6; Wesley, 2. - Messrs. H; E. Watts and E. J. Hewitt were umpires.

SOMERVILLE OFF FORM ' north £hore surprises North Shore -caused -one of the surprises of the season by extending Somcrville in a match which produced very poor hockey. The champion team was off form and during the first half especially North Shore had the better of the game. North Shore established a 2—o lead at half-time, but Somcrville recovered, and toward the end showed itself definitely superior. Somcrville was the first to attack, Boswell sending Glanville to the circle, but the ball went over the line. Play moved from end to end rapidly. Finally B. Watts headed for the circle, only to bo stopped by H. Jones. The Somerville forwards kept round the goal, however, and Vail had to stop several Bliots. Hayson cleared and enabled Anthony and Williamson to reach the circle, chances being .spoiled by hard-hitting. Cox went away again, and ; following exchanges in the circle Moore scored, E. Watts broke through the North Shore defence apd reached the circle, but his shot was stopped by Vail. Play moved to the other end, and from a corner Cox scored. The score at half-time was:—North, Shore, 2; Soraervillo, 0. North Shore pressed from the bully and reached the circle, several shots just missing the gbal. Somervillo was conceded two penalty corners, but failed to score from them, and North Shore broke away. HQwever. Somorville returned for E. Watts to score. North Shore attacked for a long period until E. Watts relieved by making a fine run downfield, H, Jones clearing well. Soniervilln worked its way toward the North Shore goal and from a corner C.
