NOTES ON THE RACING

THE DEFEAT OF CURIE GOOD EFFORT BY VALPEEN MERCIAN PRINCE AGAIN [BY TELEGRAPH—FROM ARCHER] WELLINGTON, Saturday Tho each-way favourite, Royal Lineage, made a fine attempt to win the Talavera Hurdles at Trentham to-day, but lie was narrowly beaten in a hard finish by Transact, who was at a fair price. Illuminate, Royal Lineago and Playground were quickly prominent from Emotion and Vitaphone. Fmotion. joined Illuminate in the front along tho back, but Royal Lineage, who was jumping splendidly, assumed command before reaching the top from Illuminate, Transact, Vitaphone and Fmotion. Royal Lineage just led entering the straight from Transact, with Silver Division next. Royal Lineage camo out wido in. the run homo and Transact on the inside was almost level with him at the last fence.

Iransact finished gamely Under pressure to deleft Roy.al Lineage by a,head. Vitaphone was three lengths away third and Chile ran on to got fourth, ahead of Silver Division and Illuminate. Transact .jumped much better than on the second day and just outstayed Royal Lineago at the finish.' Vitaphone did not fence too well, otherwise he may have given more trouble. Emotion failed to do as well as expected, apparently being troubled by the going. Silver Division wan alao well beaten after having every chance. ' 1

Heads separated the placed horses in a great finish in the Novice Handicap and viotory went to the fourth favourite, Windward, who has. been racing fairly • consistently lately. Jubilee Song, Choral, Sweet Music, Royal Feast and Windward were all prominent early. Sweet Music leading into, the straight from Jubilee Song, Royal Feast, Windward and Host. Onco the pressure was applied Sweet Music began to tire and inside the distance there was little between Royal Feast,. Hest and Windward. Windward's Solid Condition

Over the last 50 yards Windward did best to score from Royal Feast, with Heat third. Sweet Music was fourth, followed by Jubilee Song and Pawky. Windward was assisted by his solid condition. Hest appeared n shade unlucky. Sweet Music weakened in the last furlong and so did Jubilee Song, whose condition is susceptible to improvement.

Only five started in the July Steeplechase, but it was a fine contest between the favourites, Riotous and Valpeen, who finished first and second. Riotous and Valpeen went together , from the start and were well clear of the others most of the way until Jayson under pressure ran up to tlieni at the third to last fence. Riotous held just a slight advantage from. Valpeen and Jayson turning into the straight and, ing over the last fence in front, went on to score by a length from Valpeen, who defeated Jayson by six lengths. The placed horses were the only ones to finish, Membo losing his rider about six furlongs from homo and Copey being pulled up when a long way back. ..The first and second horses gave fine displays of jumping and Riotous, after covering less ground on the_ inside than Valpeen, did best in the straight, although Valpeen made. a game effort under pressure at the finish. Jayson made a creditable showing, but the other pair were never dangerous. . The each-way favourite, Hunting Jay, was troublesome at the post in the Crofton Handicap and was left ' standing, taking no part in the race, Dick Whittington and Jacana were also slow to begin and when the field had settled down Horowhenua was in command from Brown Pearl, Square Acre, Araios, Maiiie and Gladium. At the false rail Gladium (on the inside), Sauaro Acre and Maine all challenged. A Decisive Victory

Square Acre gave nothing a chance over the lasts furlong and won three lengths from Maine. Gladium' was two lengths away third and rßrown Pearl was fourth, followed by Horowhenua and Flamingo. • "" .« rr ' Square Acre won running away. He is owned by the Auckland sportsman, Mr. A. Coubrough,' aiid is trained at Awapuni bj h. Knapp, who took charge of him only a few weaks ago. Sine© then lie has won two races. Maine showed improvement, and Gladium, after looking likely at the false rail, weakened under his weight toward the end. Horowhenua went fast from an outside position early, but failed to run on in the straight. , . On the strength of liis decisive win on the first day Rasouli was made an each-way favourite for the Winter Hurdles and he realised expectations by again winning well. Imperial Prince, Cargen, Blacksmith and Free Air were the leaders over' the first fence, Blacksmith and Imperial Prince then going on in the lead. Blacksmith was in command passing the stands with Imperial Prince, Pahu and Gold. Knight wide out almost in line next, ahead of Wee Pat. Rasouli and Free Air. Billy Boy and Calla. mart were in the rear. Turning ,out of the straight Gold Knight assumed command and ha was the leader along the back from Pahu and Blacksmith, who were together, with Rasouli moving up ahead of Free lAir. , ~ , Rasouli just led from Pahu at thq turn, with Free Air and Gold Knight closest of the others. Nearing the last fence 1 ahu closed on Rasouli, but Rasouli drew away in the run home to score by four lengths. Callamart, staying on, was eight lengths away third, and Billy Boy was right up fourth. Next to finish were Stanchion, rree Air, Blacksmith and Imperial Prince, with Wee Pat last. Aucklanders' Performances Rasouli was well back in the early stages, but moved up handy along the back and was always going like a winner after taking command over half a mile from home. Pahu ran bin best race for some time, and Callamart came from, a good distance . back tff> get third, just cutting Billy Boy out of that position at the end. Billy Boy did easily the beat of the Aucklanders,, although Free Air m:ide a creditable showing and was a place possibility at the last fence. Imperia Prince, Cargen and Wee Pat were all well beaten Wee Pat finishing a long way back. Curie was a better favourite than the Lord Val-Prince Val bracket on both machines for the Winter Oats Handicap and be made a great effort to win, only to be narrowly beaten m an exciting finish by Prince Val. A good start was effected and ltoyal Bengal was first ont from | l 'PPery. Beryl Latour. Gay Court and King Musk. Ida Merling ran up prominently in the second furlong.
