TAR IGNITED

100 GALLONS DESTROYED LIQUID BOILS OVER About 100 .gallons of tar were destroyed by fire at the premises of British Pavements, Limited, Three Kings Road, Mount Roskill, yesterday morning. The tar was being heated in two boilers when it boiled over and was ignited by flames from the furnace underneath.

Tho ' Mount Roskill Brigade was called, and in spite of difficulties caused by a dense volumo of smoke, the firemen controlled the outbreak with a lead of hose. The boilers were twisted by tho heat. No other damage was caused, as the boiling operations were being carried out in a scoria pit. Mackay, seedsman and florist, 98 Queen Street, and several shelves and a small quantity of stock were damaged. I/. W. Maclean. Mrs. Maclean was in Palmerston North at tho time. Mr. Maclean was at work in a paddock when ho saw smoke rising. Ho believed it to be from a bush fire, but on making investigations he found his home was ablaze.
