FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of July 5, 1884: Great improvements have been effected in the way of building operations along the old Great North Road during the past 12 _ months, especially on the line of road between Archhill and Avondale. Several buildings are now in the course of erection. The complaints concerning the condition of Archhill Road are still loud and deep. The Army and Navy Hotel building, now standing on the site of the new Town Hall, was sold by auction yesterday. There was a good deal of competition and finally the lot was knocked down at £165 to Mr. James Dempsey. Since the writs for general election were issued the groups of idlers in Lower Queen Street at the corner of the Thames and Waitemata Hotels have sensibly diminished. It is stated that the pothouse politicians are all away electioneering. Interesting services are advertised for to-morrow at St. David's Church, Symonds Street. At the forenoon service, four elders will be ordained, so that the church may now be congratulated on having, for the first time, a session of its own.
