ART OF THE DRAMA

UNIVERSITY LECTURE " Great art was never born in the schools and universities, there it only languishes and dies," said Professor W. A. Sewell on Tuesday night at the Auckland University College in commencing the first of three lectures on the art of the drama. Mr. T. U. Wells presided over a large audience. Subsequent lectures will deal with Shakespeare and tho theatre, and the theatro of today and to-morrow., " I think it is a serious thing to hear tho suggestion of tho formation of a theatro in connection with the university," continued Professor Sewell. " We shall do well to save the drama from being made the subject of literary study. 1 should, however, like to see a dramatic club founded. " Tho appeal of the theatre is primarily emotional and not intellectual," said Professor Sewell. " You cannot all think together, but you can feel in unison. Bernard Shaw is such a great playwright because bo can turn thoughts into feelings, never expounding but always persuading."
