LABOUR ON FARMS

gj rj —On last year's observations it seemed that with hours and conditions it was difficult to get farm hands at a starting wage of £1 a week for single and £2 a week for married men. "Up to 50s had to be paid to get or retain good men. The farmer has had to write off all the value of his land and half the improvements before he can employ men at all. May I express the opinion that unemployment benefits are keeping the starting wage about 5s a week too high. The position could be rectified by cutting out the unemployment tax on all farm employees and if possible on the farmers themselves. I believe this would have a wonderful effect in reducing unemployment. C. White.
