LATE COLONEL PLUGGE
FUNERAL AT TAUPIRI MANY OFFICERS ATTEND [from our own correspondent] TAUPIRI, Tuesday The funeral of the late LieutenantColonel Arthur Plugge, C.M.G., took place at 'Taupiri to-day. There was a larger attendance at Christ Church than could fee accommodated in the building, several hundred people assembling to pay their last respects to the deceased soldier. Here the service was conducted by Archdeacon H. A. Hawkins and the Rev. E. R. Wright, vicar of Huntly. The cortege to the Taupiri cemetery comprised nearly 70 motor-cars. Among those who attended were: —General Sir George Richardson; Colonel J. E. Duigan, chief staff officer of the Northern Command; Lieutenant-Colonel T. Paterson, Lieutenant-Colonel Macky, Lieutenant-Colonel Sinel; LieutenantColonel J. G. Craig, N.Z.M.C., of Morrinsville; Major J. T. Bateson, of the 16th Waikato Regiment; Major Tilsey, of Auckland; Major H. M. Clark, Major A. Price, Captain W. R. Foster, Captain J. A. M. Clochan, N.Z.S.C., of Hamilton; Captain N. S. Johnson, representing tho Hamilton Returned Soldiers' Association; Messrs. D. Howlett and C. B. Shine, Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association; Mr. C. Sherwin, Huntly Returned Soldiers' Association; Mr. R„ Eyre, Mayor of Ngaruawahia; Mr. E. George, Mayor of Huntly; Mr. M. J., Galvin, of the Crown Lands Department; and representatives of various sports and other bodies with which the late Colonel Plugge had feeen actively connected. As a mark of respect the older pupils of tho public school at which his four children received their education were lined up near the church. At the cemetery the returned soldiers formed a guard of honour from tho gate to tho graveside. Tho pallbearers wcro all returned soldiers, Messrs. H. C. M. Norris (Hamilton), W; Waring (Taupiri), J. Troup, W. Hartles, V. Farrington and E. Sutherland (from the Henry soldier settlement). e The service at the graveside was conductod by the Rev. E. R. Wright. Following the religious rites, tho Last Post was sounded by Bugler E. L. Houlton. An impressive tribute was then paid by all th,o returned soldiers pi'esent, each of whom dropped ! upon tho coffin tho scarlet poppy he had worn throughout the proceedings. Military honours were accorded the deceased, tho coffin being covered with tho Union Jack, upon which lay the colonel's hat and sword.
