COROMANDEL COUNTY

DEDUCTION IN VALUATIONS h DECISION OF COUNCTL \ ELECTRIC LIGHTING PROJECT [by telegraph OWN correspondent] COROMANDEL. Monday The question of lighting Coromandel by electricity was raised at the Coromandel County Council meeting to-day fey Mr. H. W. Howell, who, as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, asked the council's permission to raise a loan to instal plant and reticulate the town. The council somo months ago gave an option to, a private individual for six months to raise capital for the purpose. That option had now expired. Mr.; Howell said the Chamber of Commerce already had some funds in hand for lighting purposes, and at a recent meeting the opinion was expressed that good support would be given to a lighting scheme. Mr. R. Campbell, another member of the council, supported Mr. Howell's / request. The chairman, Mr. N. A. Wells, was sympathetic to the request, but con- ' I sidered the amount asked for, £ISOO, .was too small for the purpose. The council gave an assurance to the two councillors that it would not stand in the way of the promotion of an electric light and power schemo for the township, but asked for more definite figures regarding the support which, would bo promised. The county foreman reported that hcavv seas had caused a wash-out on the Thames coast road, and 30ft. of new breakwater groin had been built to ' save further erosion to tho main highway at this point. The chairman reported having attended the conference concerning native rates held at Rotorua. ' The council supported the resolution passed by the Tuapeka County Council regarding the exercising of votes by persons holding miners' rights. The council decided to reduce all valuations in the county, not hitherto reduced by 25 per cent, under the provisions of section 5 of the Valuation of Lands Amendment Act, for the current rating period. _ 1V / / The district engineer of the Public Works Department advised that the Minister had authorised the formation and metalling of about six miles of the Colville-Port Jackson road by the department, the work to be done by unemployed married men. It was proposed to proceed with the work as soon as the necessary preliminary arrangements had been completed. The council decided to guarantee the maintenance of the road and offered £SO toward the work to be done by the department.
