HIRE OF TAXIS
NEW WELLINGTON SCALE MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM Changes in the by-law governing charges for taxi hire have been made by the Wellington City Council. The principal alteration is a reduction of the number of passengers paying the minimum fare from four to two. The maximum and minimum fares payable are fixed as follows: —For a distance not exceeding one mile for one or two passengers, Is; for each and over}' additional half-mile, 6d; for each and every additional passenger over two 6d extra for the first mile and 6d extra for each additional half-mile. Waiting time is to be charged for at the rate of 6d for every complete five minutes. Luggage on the carripr will cost 6d. Mr. H. A. Huggins, in presenting the amendments to the council, said the committee that had looked into the question had considered that although some drivers were experiencing hardship, from the public point of view it was not reasonable to increase the minimum fare to mort than Is. Therefore the reduction in the number of passengers under that charge had been made. He had conferred with a number of drivers who had said they could make the Is charge pay. It was impossible to please all of them —they were in about four camps —but he considered the balance had been struck fairly. Mr. R. McKeen said he was informed that the drivers did not want an unrestricted fare.
