TAIHAPE RESERVOIR
REASONS FOR COLLAPSE ENGINEER EXONERATED [BY TELEGRAPH —I'UESS ASSOCIATION] TAIHAPE, Saturday Thq report of the consulting engineer, Mr. 11. Worley, of Hamilton, on the new reservoir, which cost over £2500 and collapsed irretrievably, has been released for. publication. The report says the site is excellent, but that sandstone formation is lamentably Jacking in tensile strength to resist the bursting force of water when only reinforced witli . two inches of gunite lining. ilr. Worley says the old reservoir may be made adequate to the needs of the borough for many years for an outlay of about £220. He exonerates the borough engineer completely and says that .reservoir building is specialised work, therefore the Borough Council made a mistake in not obtaining the advice of a consulting engineer. Ho adds that the council should havo placed no reliance on the gratuitous opinions of visiting engineers, since opinions that are not paid for are worth professionally what they cost. The report will be presented by the council to a publiu meeting on Monday night. . .. „
