MATAMATA TEAM'S SUCCESS UNIVERSITY SIDE DEFEATED Rugby football competitions were continued in the various country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday. The Auckland University senior team visited Matamata and suffered defeat at the hands of the home fifteen. University, however, was below Ktreogth. The following results of matches were forwarded by corresdeuts of the Hkiiald: — Te Awamutu. —Fine weather prevailed for the Waipa Rugby Union's championship competitions, and there was a good attendance at headquarters. The third grade games resulted: City, 16, High School, 0; Waitoa, 8, Manawaru, 0. • Matamata.—The second annual visit of the Auckland University team to Matamata drew a record crowd to Bedford Park, the spectacular game of the first meeting Inst year not being forgotten. This game was equally fast and interesting, and kept the spectators at a high pitch of excitement throughout. Disappointment wns felt owing to University having to rearrange its bnclt line, and because Caughey was unable to play. The visitors' threequarter line was made up of McVeagh, Bracewell and Green, while Mulvihill and Lewis played fiveeighths. and Jenkin half. Manukau. —The only senior gnme played in the Manukau Sub-Union was between Drury, last year's champions, and Hunua, which had been unbeaten this season. The gamo was won by Drury by 9 points to 8. It wan a good game of football, played at Drury, and n, large crowd turned out to witness the local team in action against the Hunua men. For Drury. Hodgms scored u brilliant try, and Sinton and W. C'ossey each gained a try. For Hunua, Pickard scored and converted and A. Milne scored a try. Hodgins. of Drury. was injured temporarily, while C. Home, of Hunua, had to retire early in tho game with injuries. For Drury, tho outstanding men were Hodgin3, Sinton, T. and S. Cossey, the Instnnmed putting in some brilliant work behind the scrum. In the junior section Maimrewa easily beat Drury by 30 points to 8, and Clevedon beat Papakura by 17 to 8. Whangarel.—Notwithstanding the heavy rain of the previous night, Rugby Park was in surprisingly good condition for football. Light showers fell and tho weather was very uninviting, thus affecting the attendance. There were two senior games played simultaneously on number one and two grounds, the chief attraction being the fixture between Old Boys and Mangakahia. This wn-s won by Old Boys, 9 points (tries each by Beehro, and Saul) to 6 (try by Simmonson and penalty goal by li. Allison). The absence of the brilliant Old Boys' threequarter, Campbell, appeared to have completely disorganised the team's combination. Mangakahia was weak in backs, but had a good lot of forwards, who were heavier than their opponents. In the middle of the second half J. Allison, forward for Mnngaltahin, retired on account of injury to tho left leg, and there was no emergency to replace him. For Old Boys, Bradley, Hart and Tucker were very prominent and did yeoman service to withstand the onslaught of their heavy opponents. Reed. Saul and Beehre were the most prominent of the backs. For Mangakahia J. Allison. S. Allison and J. Rika were the pick of a splendid lot of forwards. Wellsford defeated Pakiri, 6—o. Pakiri defended well, but Wellsford kept up a steady attack, the Wellsford pack being a little too strong for the opposing forwards. J. Worthington and' J. The Rangitaiki players showed a distinct improvement upon their form in the last representative match and their backs were superior to those of Opotiki. Two minutes after tho start of the game two Opotiki players, Gleason and Edwards, collided with such force they had to retire, Mokomoko and Hickey replacing them. Tho outstanding players for Opotiki were Newth and Newdick, while Ohapata, F. Howell and Lees were Rangitaiki's best workers. The scorers for Rangitaiki wejp Ohapata three tries. Lees one. Harriß, the Huntly fullback, secured a try, which Ralph converted. McBurney, scoring again, brought Ngaruawahia's pointß at half-time to eight, against Huntly's five. In the second half R. Day, for Huntly, crossed Ngaruawahia's line and Ralph converted. During the last 10 minutes Tukero scored two triee, bringing Ngaruawahia to 14. Huntly failed to improve its score.
