MOUNT EDEN DRAINAGE
WORK TO CONTINUE SUBSIDY PLAN APPROVED The question of extending the sewerage system of Mount Eden was considered at a meeting of the Borough Council last evening. Tho matter was introduced by a recommendation from the Finance Committee that sections of sewerage work now in hand should be continued and that 50 men be employed under the Government subsidy scheme for a trial period of 13 weeks. It was further recommended that the work" of forming a new section of drainage, representing approximately half the sewerage yet to be undertaken, should be let by contract at an estimated cost of £12,000, men living in Mount Eden to bo employed. Mr. S. E. Chappell said he thought it would be advisable to continue with tho work now in progress only, and not to enter into any contract.
The borough foreman of works, Mr. J. S. Williamson, said he did not favour the letting of a contract. Ho would liko to see men employed under the subsidy scheme. Mr. F. S. Battley quoted a report by tho foreman to the effect that there were still about 25,000 ft. of drainage construction required to complete the sewerago system of the borough. The estimated cost of this by contract was £24,700 and, by subsidised labour, employing 50 men at standard rates of pay, £29,420. By subsidised labour, employing 50 men, but using tAVO or more compressors, tho cost would be £19,670. It was decided that up to 100 men should be employed full time on the Calgary Street section of the work under the Government subsidy scheme, for a trial of 13 weeks, the foreman of works to have authority to select tho men to be employed.
