ST. MARK'S CHURCH, REMUERA

Sir, —The old painting showing St. Mark's Church, Remuera, in its oldtime beautiful rural surroundings in Tuesday's Herald revives many happy memories of early boyhood days. The artist rather creates the impression that Major Pine's house lay at the back of the church, whereas it was situated at the side, with a noble .avenue of trees leading in from Remuera Road. What caused me to take up the pen was to point out the error that the portion where the sheep was grazing was the site of the old Newmarket railway workshops. This is not so. The workshop site lay on the other side of the railway line and some distance away nearer Newmarket, where the remains can still be seen. The portion shown in the painting was leased to a Mr. Sandfe, who milked and had a milk round for many years. The painting, while calling forth memories of early and very beautiful rustic surroundings, also shows the progress of a modern city with hundreds of homes now occupying the site of Dilworth's farm of long ago.
