STREET COLLECTIONS

APPEALS IN LONDON SUGGESTED LIMITATION [FROM OUR OWN COnRKSPOXDKNrI LONDON. April IS Lord Trenchard, Concessioner of Police, appoints the Advisory Committee on Street Collections. In its report for 1933 the committee advises limitation of the number of street collections in the juetropolitan police district, although generous support is-_« given to the numerous appeals made. During the year 256 collections were made, 17 fewer than in 1932. The total collected was £232.725, compared with," £230,868 the previous year. Three-" 1 fifths of this amount was'collected on • < Poppy Day, which realised £99,233, *> and on Alexandra Rose Day. which realised £45,479. The committee report that, representations have been received with increasing force from various sources that the number of collections should be limited, and that the general principles on which the regulations have been administered are at present under review.. "The figures for the last 11 years show that the response remains fairly consistent," 'says the report, "and seems to indicate that the generous instincts of the public over-rule any irritation which they may feel at the recurrence of street collections. At the same time new entrants to the field should realise that if the public becomes exasperated •by the over;-fre- ♦ quency of such appeals they will be'' killing tho goose that lays the golden egg. The committee sees considerable force in the argument that the time has come when, for tho protection of public amenities, the number of street collections held should be limited."
