DAVIS CUP COMPETITION TWO MATCHES DRAWN GOOD STANDARD DISPLAYED Three hard-fought games were played in the fourth round of the Davis Cup hockey competition 011 Saturday, two resulting in a draw. At Remuera, the grounds were fairly soft, but spectators were given two splendid exhibitions of fast, hard hockey in the matches between University and SOlll- - and Wesley and North Shore. University, which had the better of the first half, was leading by 2 goals to 0 at one stage, but in the second spell Somerville forced the pace, and soon equalised the scores. From then 011 the game was an even tussle. Wesley, which has shown steady improvement this season, had its first win by defeating North Shore by 2 goals to 1. At Papatoetoo, the homo team put up a very cieditable performance in drawing with St. Luke's, 4 —all. Results of the senior grade games were:— University, 2; Somerville, 2. Wesley, li; North Shore, 1. St. Luke's, 4; Paputoetoe, 4. HONOURS DIVIDED SOMERVILLE AND UNIVERSITY Fine defence by the backs of both sides was a feuture of the drawn match between University und Somerville. Toward the latter part, alter having had the advantage in the first spell. University had to work hard to avoid defeat. The match was probably the fastest and best seen this season. Somerville attacked at the outset, C. Watts initiating a nice movement. The ball passed out to Wellbourne, who sent in a fine centre, which was deflected by Kobinson. Don shifted play to the other end, but Parker soon cleared, and a fumble by Kobinsoa let E. Watts away. Ilobinson, however, by a speedy dash, tipset a combined attack between tjie Watts brothers. University battled its way to the other end, but a corner was not turned to account, and a period of scrappy play in midfield followed. Somerville had a lucky escape when, after a tussle in the circle, Smith stopped the ball right on the goal line. AlcNab started a counter-attack, which E. Watts continued to the circle edge, but his shot went too high, and from tho bully, the University right flank took the ball into Scmervillo's quarters. Crawley saw his chance and sent a fast rising shot into tho goalmouth. Don and Floyd returned to tho attack, and Somerville was pressed hard for some minutes. E. Watts made a lonohanded sortie, but could not break through, ! and the University left flank took playback into Somerville's territory. The spell ended without further score. University attacked from the reopening bully, and within a few moments Don. receiving a pass from the right, sent a beautiful shot into the goal. Somerville now launched a series of vigorous attacks and play became very fast. In a hard tussle in the goal mouth. Captain Brown mis-hit in attempting to save a shot from Wellbourne, and the ball trickled into tho net. University retaliated strongly and the pace became very fast. Eventually, from a rollin, E. Watts look the ball into tho circle. Captain Brown ran out, but Watts was too fast for him and equalised tho score. Somerville again drove University back and a goal seemed inevitable. Bobinson eventually cleared, however. In midfield, Crawley received a bad knock from the ball and had to retire, being replaced by Laurie. Floyd was seen in a clever solo run half tho length of the field, but ho lost possession in tho circle, and there was no one to follow him up. Heard sent E. Watts away and C. Watts finished up in the circle. Captain Brown blocking tho attack. Play continued to be very fast and even, Somerville maintaining 1110 attack consistently. At last University got play into the other half, and Floyd broke away. Ho finished off with a splendid shot. but Delahunty stopped well and. although Laurie ran in, Somerville was able to stem flu- attack. Again University drove Somervillo back, but only momentarily. Willi only a few minutes to go both sides were forcing tho pace, but honours wero even and tho match ended with the score:—Somerville, 2; University, 2. Messrs. A. Playle and H. E. Watts were referees. WESLEY'S SECOND WIN STRONG DEFENCE North Shore, for tho first time this season, was able to field a full team in its match against Wesley, but it was not able to overcome tho stubborn dofenco of its opponents, and the game ended with a score of 2 goals to 1 in Wesley's favour. After a period of midfield play, North Shore forced Wesley back in a series of sharp combined forward rushes. Burton and Surman were doing good work, however, and most of tho attacks broke down on the circle edge. Philpott started n Wesley attack, Kill reaching North Shore's circle, but Carter blocked the movement and sent Cox away. Chances were lost in tho circle; and a. right wing movement by Wesley took play back to tho other end, Philpott finishing off with a 6hot that found the net. The spell ended shortly after with the score:—Wesley, 1; North Shore, 0. North Shore took up the offensive 011 resuming, but the Weßley defence held, and a period of indecisive play followed. Fleet sent the Wesley forwards away in a fast combined rush, Chapman's shot missing tho opening. A counter-attack by North Shore failed in a similar way when Anthony's shot went wide. From the bully, Wesley waß away, and North Shore had to concede a corner, from which Smith goaled. Wesley was soon back, but Neale's shot missed the opening. Williamson turned tho tables, and from a meleo Cox opened North Shore's account. Weslej' retaliated with a long series of attacks, but the game ended with the score:—Wesley, 2; North Shore, 1. Messrs. G. Waddingham and A. Rivers were referees.

FAST, EVEN GAME PAPATOETOE AND ST. LUKE'S Played on a fast ground at Papatoetoe, tho match between the homo team and St. Luke's produced a fine standard of hockey. Papatoetoe's reorganised forward line, with M. J. Bay as centre, showed itself in great form right from the start, and the final result of the game, four goals all, was a very fair indication of the strength of the teams. From the opening bully, St. Luke's attacked, but was sent back by Kerr. Lawrence sent Bay and Middleton away and a fine passing rush for 50 yards nearly produced a goal, Bay's shot being stopped by Wattam. Papatoetoe had a succession of corners, but could not get past Wattam, and eventually T. Clark sent his forwards away. Airey stopped a shot, but Vipond took tho rebound nnd _ opened St. Luke's score. Papatoetoe retaliated with a series of 'promising attacks but clever defence saved tho situation for St. Luke's and, after a fast combined attack, Cori.n scored St. Luke's second goal. L. Smytheman and Bay gained the circle, both Bhooting unsuccessfully in turn. Dunn then took the ball in the air and gave tho goalkeeper no chance. St. Luke's, 2; Papatoetoe, 1. Papatoetoe took up the offensive on tho resumption and after several attacks a timely centre from Neild enabled Bay to goal easily, equalising the score. The game was very exciting at this stage and, after a long tussle, Torbet beat_ Airey from close range. The scoro was again equalised when L. Smytheman, collecting a centre from Neild, ran round F. Clark, and scored from a shnrp angle. St. Luke's retaliated with a long-sustained scries of forward rushes and although tho Papatoetoe defenco was doing good work, Torbet scored from a melee. With only a few minutes to go tho paeo became very fast, both sides spoiling several rushes J>y over-en eerness. Just before time, however, Bay, with brilliant stick-work, beat T. Clark and Wattam, the game ending with the score:— panatoetoe, 4; St. Luke's, 4. Messrs. C. C. Preston and H. C. McCuarrie were referees.
