DAIRY FARMING

Sir, —The figures submitted by your correspondent "Dairy .Farmer" are most instructive. Most of us can obtain a wealth of information on soil treatment, animal management, etc., but an analysis of receipts and expenditure (most important of all) is not readily obtainable. Your correspondent does not allow anything for interest, and is evidently basing his calculations on an unencumbered property. If his figures aro correct, where does the mortgageo como in? There must bo (some of these necessary peopll? who are still collecting interest from their loans to dairy farmers; therefore, some farmers must either got greater returns than , those shown in the letter under review, or thoir expenditure must bo less? The item £2O for replacements is surely open to question? Aro not replacements usually provided for from heifei's reared on the farm, and aro there nob a few spare hoifers or cull .cows sold each year? What revenue also could bo expected from pigs on the farm referred to, and possibly from poultry, or even bees? A neighbour of mine claims ,to have paid all grocery bills for a family of fivo adults from the produce of 50 to 60 hens, and this after providing for corn, etc. Another friend says that as well as milking 25 cows he was able to substantially augment his income from a number of beehives. Will "Dairy Farmer" enlighten lis in respect of these suggestions? Inquired,
