WORKLESS EX-SOLDIERS

PROVINCIAL COMMITTEE INVESTIGATING DISTRESS An Auckland Provincial Returned Soldiers' Associations' Unemployment Committee has recently been formed, and is now functioning. The returned soldiers' associations which at present have delegates on the committee are Auckland, Western Suburbs, Franklin, Wainku, Otghuhu, Onehunga, Waikato, Huntly, Cambridge, and Te Awamutu. The immediate object of the committee is the compilation of information concerning unemployment among exservicemen. For the last month the committee has been investigating definite cases of hardship and distress among returned men. When complete the data will be placed before the executive of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association in Wellington, with a request that the information should be brought under the notice of the Government and the Unemployment Board, with a view to assisting in the alleviation of hardship among ex-ser-vicemen in the province. Problems being considered by the committee include the provision of rations, sustenance, the No. 5, 4A and small farms schemes, and unemployment and Public Works Department camps.

The personnel of the committee at present comprises:—Chairman, Mr. It. W. Wise (Western Suburbs Returned .Soldiers' Association); vice-chairman, Mr. J. W. Kendall (Auckland); honorary secretary, Mr. L. Crawford Watson (Western Suburbs); committee, Mr. S. P. Day (Franklin), Colonel M. Aldred (Waiuku), Mr. C. 0. Brown and Mr. W. B. Lyons (Auckland), Mr. R. V. Closey (Otahuhu), Mr. N. A. Chins (Onehunga), Mr. W. Bullough (Huntly), Mr. S. N. Ziman and Mr. A. J. Swavne (Cambridge), Mr. Noel Johnston and Mr. 11. D. McFarland (Waikato), Mr. J. Olipliant (Te Awamutu). Mr. S. J. Harrison, general secretary of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, was present at a meeting of the committee held during the weekend and .gave an assurance of the hearty co-operation of the Dominion executive in Wellington. The commilrtec has had reports that similar committees are being formed in Southern centres.
