FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Hebald of May 14, 18S4: — At a meeting of the Harbour Board yesterday the plans of the new grading dock at Calliope Point were laid on the table. The engineer, 3fr. Krrington. estimated the cost of the dock, constructed according to the plan, and built of first-class material, to be within £120,000. As stated previously in our columns, it is intended to construct the dock 100 ft. further inland, thus reducing the size of the coffer-dam to 250 ft. A saving in concrete will be effected, according to the new plans. The long-expected railway station is advertised for tenders to-day. l»e work is a large and most important one and will give employment to a number of men. When completed, the station will be a great convenience. Lord Derby has written to the Governors of the various colonies, stating that if the colonies will vote a certain sum toward expenses, the Q uec will assume authority over the coasts of New Guinea.
