AUSTRALIAN MINES
TECHNICAL PROBLEMS AVENUE OF EMPLOYMENT Investigations into means of giving work to young unemployed men, it was stated in Melbourne lately, have convinced the Australian Government that substantial results can •be gained by stimulating goldmining in all States. It was indicated authoritatively that a policy for this purpose would be formulated, and that, although no grants of money would be made to the States to assist prospectors, the Commonwealth would deal with technical problems, such as the treatment of refractory ores, in the hope that this might lead to the opening of new fields.
It was also stated that the Federal Ministry had been informed that there was a shortage of men skilled in the timbering of mines, and that the time was approaching when there would be a shortage of gold miners. These shortages have resulted from the great absorption of skilled men in the large mines.
The Federal Ministry expresses a hope that the aerial survey of Northern Australia will open the way for the development of large mineral, areas and the provision of work for the unemployed.
