EXPORT OF TIMBER

WEST COAST SHIPMENTS An improvement in the export of rod pine from the West Coast to Australia is reported, although there is a slight decrease in the shipments of white pine. The prices for red pine aro not yet satisfactory, stated a timber merchant, but heiexpects them to impiove. .1 ho timber being shipped across the Tasman each month represents a considerable increase on tho monthly shipments 12 mouths ago. The Kiwitea sailed last week for Sydney with 800.000 superficial feet. The Gabriella and Kartigi will load approximately 1,500,00011. for Australian ports later this month.

MARGARINE SUFFERS

CHEAP BUTTER AND LARD While low prices for butter in England are affecting tlio fsalo of best grades of margarine, competition by cheap lard has also affected the margarine trade. This was made clear at the annual meeting in London of tho Maypole Dairy Company, Limited, whose profits in 1933 dropped by £i55,000 to £312,000. "There is no sign of an immediate advance in butter prices suflicient materially to help tho margarine trade," said Sir James Martin, chairman of diiuctors. ''Quotas in other countries and increased and unrestricted production in New Zealand and Australia have resulted in huge quantities of butter being shipped to Britain at prices which, to put it mildly, cannot possibly be remunerative to the producer. This is a state of affairs which will no doubt bo rectified in time."
