HONOUR FOR BOTANIST
DR. LEONARD COCKAYNE

Dr. Leonard Cockayne, C.M.G., F.R.S., of "Wellington, has been elected to honorary fellowship of the Royal Botanical Society of Edinburgh. Honorary fellowship of this society is restricted to a small group of 36 botanists, and, as far as can bo ascertained, this is the first occasion on which the honour has been conferred on a British botanist residing beyond tho confines of Great Britain and Ireland.
Dr. Cockayne is honorary botanist to the State Forest Service and the Citv of Wellington. He has devoted most of his time to research on the flora and vegetation of New Zealand, and exploring botanically most parts of the Dominion, including Chatham and subAntarctic islands. Several books dealing with botany in New Zealand have been written by him, as well as numerous pamphlets.
