MODERN YOUTH

UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM PROPER USE OF LEISURE [from our owx correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday The problem of youth was tho subject of an address given by Mr. James Treloar, a member of tho Hamilton Rotary Club, at the weekly luncheon of the club to-day. Mr. Treloar referred to tho changed conditions and environment which faced the youth of to-day compared with those which existed before the Great War. The youth of to-day called their parents by their Christian names and commandeered their parents' clothes, and parents could do nothing but helplessly take the lino of least resistanco. Mr. Treloar said that notwithstanding tho changed attitude of children, there was never a more beautiful and virile generation than the children of to-day. Tho position was difficult for them, chiefly on account of unemployment. Unless the older people gave them an opportunity to find themselves and provided a means of legitimate expression for their many magnificent qualities, a terrible wastage would take place, and the results would" bo too dreadful for contemplation. Mr. Treloar appealed to his hearers to teach children and youths to make a proper use of their time. If employment could not. be found for them, they could bo helped to use their leisure so that their capabilities could develop. This could be dono by fostering hobbies and increasing their appreciation of music, literature and art. Mr. Treloar said older people might have to step on one sido in order that younger people might take their place. The unrest, worry and strain of the present times would exert a pre-natal influence over a generation yet unborn, but if a spirit of self-sacrifice, service, cheerfulness under difficulties, hope and optimism could be fostered and spread abroad, tho succeeding generation would get the benefit.
