REBUFF FOR LABOUR
LONDON COUNTY COUNCIL WATERLOO BRIDGE DECISION LONDON, April 22 The decision of the Labour majority on the London County Council to have Waterloo Bridge pulled down and a new structure built to accommodate six lines of vehicular traffic, provided that 60 per cent of the cost was granted from the Roads Fund, has drawn a rebuff from Mr. Oliver Stanley, Minister of Transport. Mr. Stanley has written to the council pointing out that he cannot make a grant to assist a scheme which runs contrary to Parliament's opinion. He is not prepared to urge Parliament to alter its opinion of 1932, when it declined, by 222 votes to 154, to permit the demolition of the bridge. The old council thereupon planned to recondition the bridge.
