FIRE BRIGADE SERVICE
AWARDS AT PAPATOETOE The presentation of medals and certificates for service to members of the Papatoetoe Volunteer Fire Brigade was made at the brigade's annual function held hn Saturday evening.
Mr. J. Franklin, chairman of the fire committee of the Papatoetoe Town Board, who presided, expressed the district's appreciation of the services of the brigade. The presentations were made by Mr. W. J. Mawkes, donor of the Mawkea Cup, which is competed for annually by members of the brigade in one-man contests. The winner this year was Fireman K. Pennell, whose time for the various events was 59 2-ss, a record for the championship. The following awards were made:— Five years' service medals: Deputy Superintendent P» Pennell, Fireman R. McKenzie; three years' certificate, Fireman J. Gilman. [
TATTRANGA BOARD IMPROVEMENTS REPORTED * [from our own correspondent] TAURANGA. Saturday The annual meeting of the Tauranga Fire Board was held last evening, when the chairman, Mr. H. Clay, presented a report on the activities of the past year. '■ The report stated it was hoped that the coming year would see the completion of a improved reticulation. At the request of the board the Borough Council had installed a new fire alarm circuit, which would be operating at an early date. The brigade, which continued to give most efficient service, had received seven calls, and the total fire loss was £340. „ ' Mr. Clay was unanimously re-elected chairman. •
The board approved of the estimates of expenditure for the year ending March 31, 1935, at £634.
