ASSAULT ON OLD MAN
SEARCH FOR OFFENDER . NO CLUE DISCOVERED [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday For nearly a fortnight DetectiveSergeant J. Thompson, Detective A. ,T. White, Constable H. A. Hay, of Hamilton, 'and Constable O'Neil, of Katikati, have been engaged in investigating the brutal assault on Mr. William John Young, aged 79, in his whare on the Tauranga road three miles from Katikati, on the evening of April 9. So far no clue has been obtained which will lead to the identity of the offender.
M» Young, who lived alone, had retired to bed shortly after 8 p.m. on April 9. Before lie went to sleep he heard someone enter the whare and a little later he was struck on the head with a pair of harness hames. Mr. Young received severe injuries to the head, but after lying unconscious for 12 hours he was able to make his way to his son's place, three-quarters of a mile away. The sum of 30s was stolen from the whare. Mr. Young was removed to the Tauranga Hospital, and his lifo was despaired of, but he has made a most remarkable recovery, although not yet out of hospital.
