APPRENTICESHIP ORDER An order dealing with the conditions of apprenticeship in the furniture trade has been issued by the Arbitration Court to have effect in the northern industrial district, with the exception of the Gisborne judicial district. It is to take the place of a former order which ceased to operate on the cancellation of the last award. A new award is now in force and the order, which was made after the parties had been heard on a number of contentious clauses, will come into operation on May 7. Under the order the minimum age for the start of an apprenticeship must be 15 years and the term of apprenticeship is five years in all cases, except in the wire mattress and picture frame making branches, whore the torrn is for three years. The minimum rates of wnget; are: —First year, 12s 6d a week; second year, 19s; third year, £1„ 6s; fourth year, £1 13s 6d; fifth year, £2. In three years' apprenticeships the weekly wages to be paid in each year of service are 15s, £1 2s 6d and £1 15s. The hours will be those worked by journeymen and overtime is to be computed 'at a rate ranging from time and a-quarter to double time. An apprentice under the age of 17 is not permitted to work more than six hours' overtime in one week.
