MANY COMMISSIONS
RECURRING TENDENCY
INQUIRIES INTO PROBLEMS
DIVERSE SUBJECTS COVERED
The announcement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, last week, that a Royal Commission is to be appointed to investigate measures for rehabilitating the dairying industry, is symptomatic of the recurring tendency in New Zealand to attack problems by this method. This process has been known in the past, but for a time there was a lull. Now it has broken out again.
Already in the short period sinco the end of December, four bodies have been appointed to investigate various matters,' the personnel of three of them being announced within the short compass of 26 days. This'is approximately an average of one every nine days, a rate which, if pursued, would result in ;he appointment of more than 40 commissions or committees a year. Retails of the bodies, with the dates on which their personnel was announced, are as follows: —December 21, 193;!: Company Commission, to investigate the promotion, financial methods and operations of companies. February 3, 1934: Monetary committee, to hear evidence from those interested in monetarj and currency reform. February 22: Films .inquiry committee, to investigate difficulties that have arisen in tho film industry. February 28: Native Affairs Commission, to investigate the administrat on of native affairs.
Apart from the foregoing and the Tariff Revision Commission, appointed on ! May 10, 1933, as an outcome of the Ottawa Conference, commissions or < ommittees have held inquiries in the past four years into national expenditure, railways, education and secondary industries. >
